Welcome to Gilman.
As you navigate our website, we hope that you will begin to sense the richness of Gilman life. The many faces and facets of Gilman are the realization of our mission to educate the whole boy in mind, body, and spirit. That was the vision of those who founded the school in 1897, and we are proud to remain true to that spirit today. Of course, Baltimore and the larger world around us have changed dramatically since the school’s founding, so we constantly seek to pursue our time-honored mission within the context of an ever-evolving contemporary landscape.
Our rich and comprehensive program, our immeasurably talented and interesting faculty and students, and our belief in the character traits embodied by the Gilman Five—Honor, Integrity, Respect, Humility, and Excellence—combine to form the foundation of an educational environment that I have come to call a “community of value.” At Gilman, we believe that a challenging academic education must be augmented with lessons in values. We also believe in the inherent value of each and every person within our community. Finally, we believe that, as individuals, we must value being a part of something larger than ourselves.
I am constantly struck by the overwhelming sense that people in the Gilman community feel like they are part of something special. This grounding—in itself a somewhat traditional concept—is exactly what our boys need in our modern, increasingly interconnected world. This blend of timelessness and modernity is what makes me so excited to serve as Gilman’s 14th
Headmaster, and I invite you to explore the many powerful ways in which Gilman prepares our boys for a modern world.
