Great Employees Make Great Schools

Deciding where to teach or work is an important decision. Just as we carefully consider what talents a prospective employee may bring to our school community, we know that prospective employees must weigh many different factors in determining where to build their careers. Gilman is a place to build a career. We enjoy a remarkably low faculty turnover rate — below 10% in the last three years, where the national average is 16.8% — that is mostly attributed to retirements. We rank in the top 2% in salaries across all experience ranges among the 13 independent schools in the Baltimore area. Behind these numbers lies the fact that Gilman is an institution that cares about the well-being of its employees, nurtures creativity, and encourages further education and professional development.

Living in Baltimore

People often say that Baltimore is a big city with a small town feel. That's because of its more than 250 neighborhoods that make up the city: the quirkiness of Federal Hill or Fells Point, the gentility of Guilford, the creative energy of Mt. Vernon and Charles Village. Baltimore is home to the Walters Art Museum, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the American Visionary Art Museum; the Hippodrome Theatre brings Broadway to Baltimore; a world-class symphony orchestra and concert opera company help make spirits soar. Sports enthusiasts can follow the hometown teams in professional baseball, football, and indoor soccer, as well as several collegiate teams.

Baltimore's Central Maryland location offers easy access to myriad leisure time activities. Weekend sailors can explore the Chesapeake Bay and its many tributaries from different launching points. Ocean City and its beaches are less than three hours away, and a similar drive west brings skiers to the slopes of Garrett County. In town, children delight in the Maryland Science Center, Port Discovery, the National Aquarium, and the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore.

Baltimore also boasts a thriving academic community, with a plethora of public and private colleges and universities, including The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland professional schools, offering excellent choices for continuing education.
