Lower School Summer Reading
Read On, Boys.Dear Gilman Lower School Families,
It is time for Summer Reading! At Gilman we encourage our boys to read over the summer to avoid the “summer slide” and develop into lifelong readers. The more you read, the better reader and writer you become! This summer your son should read a variety of books at his reading and interest level. Boys should read in a variety of formats including print books, audiobooks, and eBooks. Your son does not have to read all of the books on his own—parents, older siblings, etc. may read to him.
Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth grades have one required title for summer reading (different titles for each grade), while the remaining selections are free choice. We recommend reading the required title in August so the story stays fresh in the mind for the start of the school year. The boys will have an assignment to complete related to the book. Students entering Kindergarten through First grade do not have a required title.
If you would like ideas for free choice reading, we have enclosed reading lists. For more suggestions we recommend visiting your public library or your favorite bookseller. Boys should keep track of their reading on the reading log and return it to school by September 8, 2017.
The William Passano Library will be open 8am-4pm, June 5-6. Students and parents may borrow up to 10 books at a time, and they are due at the start of the school year. While the library is closed, we recommend you use our Overdrive system and download an ebook to your own device! And we always encourage visits to the wonderful public libraries in our area.
Please let us know if you have any questions or comments. Reading during the summer should be a fun activity—we encourage the boys to get outside with their books, read in a different environment, take an adventure, and explore!
Gilman School digital collection is 24/7! Help your son keep his reading skills strong this summer with our collection of downloadable eBooks. Students can borrow titles using their Gilman issued username and password. Digital books can be enjoyed on a computer, tablet, smartphone or eReader device. Read right in the internet browser or download using the free OverDrive app. At the end of the lending period, titles automatically expire so there are never any books to return! Our digital collection can be accessed anywhere in the world, as long as there is an internet connection.
The Gilman digital collection is currently not separated by division, so please be involved and aware as to which books you allow your son to check out from the library. It is possible for a lower school student to have access to an upper school book, so we suggest you select eBooks with your son and help him make the best choices for his reading and maturity levels.
Use OverDrive to download eBooks to your own device, or visit your local public library.
Have a great summer!
