Lower School Admissions
The Lower School consists of grades pre-first through five with the main entry points at the pre-first and first grades. Openings in grades two through five are limited, but applications are welcome since unexpected openings may occur.
Boys who will turn five between August 1, 2007, and December 31, 2007 are initially evaluated for pre-first, and boys who turn five prior to August 1 are initially evaluated for first grade for enrollment in the 2008-2009 school year. Pre-first applicants are asked to come to Gilman once for an evaluation in a small group setting. First grade applications visit twice for a small group and an individual assessment. Placement in either grade is determined upon completion of the admissions process.
Applicants for grades two through five visit Gilman on a Saturday in January. The boys are given standardized achievement and ability tests, are evaluated informally by teachers, and are asked to complete a writing sample. Qualified applicants who cannot be accepted initially due to the limited number of spaces will be placed in a wait pool.
