Application Process
The complete admissions packet includes an application, a common referral form to be filled out by the candidate’s present school, a student questionnaire, and a record release form.
Application: Completing the application form is the first step in the admissions process. Once you have completely filled out both sides of the application, send it along with the $50 application fee to the Admissions Office. The deadline for application is January 9, 2009.
Applicant Questionnaire: Your son must handwrite this form.
Interview: As soon as your application is received in the Admissions Office, we will send a confirmation letter. You will be asked to call and schedule a time for an interview. Once you have arranged a time, you will receive a letter that confirms your appointment and provides you with additional information about what will happen on that day. Every applicant to Gilman will meet with an Admissions Counselor for a short interview. This is a relaxed conversation that provides us with the opportunity to learn more about your son.
Record Release Form: Give this form directly to your son’s current principal or guidance counselor. It authorizes his current school to send us his records, which are necessary to complete the application process.
Common Referral Form: Attach this form along with the Record Release Form and give to your son’s current principal or guidance counselor. Your son’s school will give this form to his teacher(s) to fill out and return to Gilman.
Admissions Testing: As part of the application process your son will take a standardized test, the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE), which is offered at many area schools. If you decide to take the ISEE at another school, simply add Gilman to the list of schools that will receive test scores.
Your son may take the ISEE at Gilman, and with written authorization ISEE will forward the results to any other school to which he is applying. For information about testing or to sign up to take the test, please call the ISEE Test Center at 1.800.446.0320, or visit their website at www.iseetest.org. Gilman test dates are November 22, 2008 at 8 a.m., and January 10, 2009 at 8 a.m.. It is recommended that you sign up for testing early. Registration for individual test dates closes approximately three weeks before the test date. The admissions office must receive test results before January 31, 2009.
Applicant Visits: Student applicants are welcome to visit classes, although this is not a required part of the admissions process. If your son would like to spend part of a day shadowing a Gilman student, you may make this request when scheduling the interview.
Campus Tours: Prospective applicants and their families are welcome to visit the campus and take a tour. Simply call the Admissions Office for a schedule of available dates and times.
