Finding terrific teachers with the ability to teach, coach, advise, and mentor our boys is a thoughtful and increasingly competitive task, and retaining them is often even more Herculean.

Our goals in this Campaign are to make our compensation and benefits package richer so that we will compete even more squarely for the best and brightest teachers both in the Baltimore region and in the nation. We also plan to create an innovative pool of unrestricted funds to support each faculty member with at least one professional development opportunity per year. We want to say “yes” to any teacher who presents a great idea, whether to hike part of the Appalachian Trail, attend a conference about learning differences, or study Spanish in Spain. Teacher creativity grows from knowing that we encourage invention. Investments in our faculty only benefit our boys.

Goal

$5 million for faculty development, continuing education, and benefits.

Initially I thought I would teach for a few years and then move on to law or business. But I was immediately taken with Gilman, and opportunities kept me here. I earned a graduate degree in Spanish literature. I spent a sabbatical teaching English in Seville. Summer grants enabled me to travel overseas. But the greatest opportunity of all is connecting with students in the classroom, in athletics, and beyond. They fill my life and make this work incredibly rewarding.
