An article in the University of Maryland Medical System Foundation magazine features Gilman Lower School students, who raised more than $27,000 for the Drs. Rouben and Violet Jiji Neonatal Intensive Care Unit through Gilman's 2015 Read-A-Thon. Recently several of the boys -– now fifth graders -- attended the ribbon cutting for an upgraded, state-of-the-art NICU room that offers parents and infants more privacy and comfort. The boys are proud of the sign outside the room, which reads "Generously Funded by Gilman Lower School." One student said, '"How cool is that? [Years from now] I'll be able to say I went to that school and helped these babies." Read the full story here.

Third graders Sam N. and Charlie H. wanted to celebrate their birthdays with a joint party with friends, but felt that they had "enough stuff." The boys asked their friends to bring gifts for the students in the Bridges program at Gilman. Bridges features a five-week summer institute as well as year-round academic and social support for students from eight Title I Baltimore City schools. The "stuff" given to friends of Sam and Charlie included playground equipment, books and clothing. Recently the boys presented their party gifts to the Upper School volunteers for the program, who will share them with Bridges students.
At the end of the school year, some dedicated students just aren't ready to put down their books. Kofi Whitehead '19 is one of them. He will spend six weeks studying at Cornell University this summer. Kofi has been selected to participate in the 2017 Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar (TASS). With an acceptance rate of 13%, he was one of only 56 students selected from around the country for the rigorous program.
A tip of the hat to Jairus Gaines '18 for his outstanding performance at Woodholme Country Club at the second round of the 2017 MIAA Individual Golf Tournament. Jairus entered the second and final round of the tournament tied for thirteenth place, but carded an impressive five under par 68 to finish the event in fourth. Jairus was the low score medalist for the second round, and completed his outing with a birdie on 17 and an eagle on 18 to earn the lowest score of the day. Congratulations Jairus!
