Apply: Upper School

Grades Nine through Twelve

Gilman School welcomes applications to its Upper School. Our main entry point is the ninth grade, but we also invite applications for tenth through twelfth grade.

In making decisions for admissions, the Admissions Committee places great emphasis on past grades, school recommendations, past standardized test scores, and personal interviews, as well as the admissions test results.

The following information is designed to help you through the admissions process. Please use this as a guide, but always feel free to call if you have any questions.

Application: Completing and submitting the application form online is the first step in the admissions process. The $50 application fee is paid when you submit your online application. The deadline for application is December 15, 2017.

Application fee waivers are available for siblings of currently enrolled students and sons of alumni. Please contact Ashley Metzbower to obtain your code.

Gilman is one of the Baltimore area schools using a web-based application called Ravenna for the submission of online applications. Ravenna allows you to efficiently apply to schools and track the status of your application online. Additionally, through Ravenna you will be able to schedule admission events and view decision notification.

To begin your application, go to Ravenna and create an account. Make sure to create your account using an email address you will have access to throughout the admission season as this will be your primary email contact with our school.

If at any point you should have a question about Ravenna and your application, please contact them at help@ravennasolutions.com. Ravenna is happy to answer your inquiry by phone, however, they require that all support inquiries are initiated through the email address you used to create your Ravenna account. It is important that they are able to validate your access to any information about your applicant’s account to protect your privacy.

Parent and Student Personal Meeting: Once you have submitted your application, you will then be able to sign up for the Parent and Student Personal Meeting. This is an on-campus personal meeting. This meeting is a chance for the Gilman Admissions team to spend dedicated time learning more about you and your son, as well as answer any questions you may have about our School. Your son will also have the opportunity to visit classes and spend part of the day shadowing a current Gilman student. While this shadow opportunity is not required as part of the admissions process, we do highly recommend it. The experience will give your son a glimpse into what it is like to be part of the Gilman community.

Applicant Visits: Student applicants are welcome to visit classes, although this is not a required part of the admissions process. If your son would like to spend part of a day shadowing a Gilman student, you may make this request when scheduling the personal meeting.

Record Release Form: This form should be given directly to your son's current principal or guidance counselor. It authorizes his current school to send us his records, which are necessary to complete the application process.

Common Referral Form: Two copies of this form should be given to your son's current school. Your son's current English and mathematics teacher needs to each fill out one of the forms and return it to Gilman.

Confidentiality: Gilman retains an applicant's information in the strictest confidence, as defined in the Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools (AIMS) Policy Statement on Confidentiality of Student Recommendations.

Admissions Testing: As part of the application process your son will take a standardized test, the Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE). You may take test at any school that offers it; you are not required to take the test at Gilman School. You may sign up online at www.iseetest.org. A searchable database of dates and test sites is available as part of the online registration. Please put Gilman's school code (210095) on the form so that we receive a copy of the results. Those families who are unable to pay the $105 registration fee may request a waiver by contacting Ashley Metzbower at 410.323.7169. Eligibility for these waivers is determined by family income.

ISEE recommends registering for the test at least three weeks prior to the test date. ISEE has determined that test scores do not improve if you take the test later in the year so REGISTER AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. Test sites will fill up. Gilman School requests that ISEE results be received no later than January 25. Your child may take the ISEE only once during the application process, and he may not take the test for practice.

The ISEE measures both ability to learn, through verbal and quantitative reasoning sections, and achievement (what a student has learned), through reading comprehension and mathematics achievement sections. We know that test results are often misunderstood and can be a source of anxiety. Test results are just one factor utilized in gaining a clearer picture of each applicant and are, by no means, the sole criterion used for Admission Committee decisions. Please feel free to call us with questions or concerns.

Notification Date: The Admissions Committee will review all applications and make decisions during the month of February. You will learn our decision on February 16, 2018, and those accepted will have until March 2, 2018, to return the enrollment contract and deposit.
