Incoming Third Grade Summer Reading 2017

Incoming third grade students are required to read 5 books. They do not have to read all of the books on their own—parents, older siblings, etc. can read to them! There is one required title which everyone must read—the other four books are free choice. Please read the required title in August –that way the story will be fresh in your mind for the start of third grade!

REQUIRED READING FOR ALL INCOMING THIRD GRADE STUDENTS:

Author Gordon Korman will visit Gilman School on October 12, 2017. We encourage students to read any books by Gordon Korman that are of interest, as knowledge of the author’s work will help make his visit even more meaningful. Gordon Korman primarily writes for the middle grades. With that in mind, we have chosen a book that is available in multiple formats so that it can be read in many ways and along with a parent, caregiver, or older sibling. All incoming third grade students will read Mr. Korman’s book, Unsinkable (Titanic, Book 1). The Titanic is meant to be unsinkable, but as it begins its maiden voyage, there is plenty of danger waiting for the young passengers. This is the story of the lives of four passengers that will be forever linked with the fate of Titanic. And the farther they get from shore, the more the danger looms...

Christopher, Matt. Football Double Threat.
Rocky Fletcher is being stretched to his limit. Until recently, he'd only played wide receiver for the Pythons. Now his coaches want him to learn the safety position, one that opened up when Bobby, Rocky's best friend, broke his leg.

Korman, Gordon. Slacker.
Cameron is a gamer and he doesn't like to do anything else. Spending every moment he can playing video games, he sometimes gets carried away. This is how the kitchen burns down and he loses his gaming privileges. His parents decide he needs to get involved in a group and interact with other kids his own age. So he and his friends create the Positive Action Group as a front so they can simply continue gaming. Things get hairy when people become interested in actually joining the group and it gets a faculty advisor!

Lin, Grace. Year of the Dog.
Frustrated at her seeming lack of talent for anything, a young Taiwanese American girl sets out to apply the lessons of the Chinese Year of the Dog, those of making best friends and finding oneself, to her own life.

Messner, Kate. Ranger in Time: Escape from the Great Earthquake. (series)
Ranger travels to San Francisco and meets Lily Chen. She was sent from China to America to work as a young servant, but she dreams of studying to be a doctor. When the Great Earthquake hits, Ranger arrives in time to rescue Lily from falling beams in the mission house where she lives.
