The annual All-School Convocation heralded the start of the 2017-18 school year at Gilman. All three divisions joined together to celebrate the beginning of the School's 121st academic year. Led by the sound of bagpipes, the senior class escorted members of the kindergarten and Prep-One classes to Sotir Stadium in the traditional opening procession.
School President Piper Bond read a passage from Psalm 36 that included the Gilman motto "In Tuo Lumine Lumen" (In thy light we shall see light). Senior Class President David Gushue read from David McCullough's book, The American Spirit.
In his remarks, Headmaster Henry P. A. Smyth spoke about the value of coming together to serve communities in crisis, which, he said, is at the very heart of the American spirit as well as Gilman's mission.
Adding a festive touch to the beginning of school, on the first day students arrived to banners, balloons, and Finney the greyhound waving cars into the driveway. Lining to driveway from the Middle School to the Lower School were teachers, administrators and seniors, who offered Gilman pennants to parents as they dropped off their boys.
