Special Giving

In addition to our annual giving program, Gilman School raises funds for capital purposes. A simple analogy likens annual giving—The Gilman Fund—to a checking account, meeting day-to-day expenses, while capital giving is more of a savings account, setting money aside for special projects and long-term investment.

Capital Giving

During the 1980s, Gilman raised over $11 million for capital purposes distinct from The Gilman Fund. The Building Character Campaign, begun in 1982, raised $6 million for faculty salaries and financial aid endowments and campus physical improvements. From 1987–91, we raised $5 million for the Redmond C.S. Finney Athletic Center. During the fall of 1995, we announced a $15 million capital campaign in preparation for our centennial anniversary. From 1995–98, Gilman raised over $18 million for new Lower and Middle Schools, and the expansion of the Science Building and arts facilities. In addition, we raised funds for endowment for faculty development, student financial aid, and technology. While goals for both The Gilman Fund and capital campaigns are equally important, they each serve a distinct purpose with a separate agenda.

Endowed Funds

Gilman School manages a number of named, endowed funds. Alumni, parents, and friends have established these endowed scholarship, faculty development, and program funds. The principal is held in perpetuity, and only the endowment income is spent. The minimum gift to create an endowed fund is $50,000.
