Getting Involved

There are many ways for parents to get involved with the life of the School, apart from waiting in carpool lines!

Parents Association Volunteer Opportunities

Bonus Card Points: coordinates and publicizes grocery store programs that earn money for School needs.

Bull Roast: organizes the School's largest friend- and fund-raising event. Volunteers solicit auction items, write entries for the auction book, decorate and set up the gym, and sell tickets, among other activities.

Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day: coordinates a special "thank you" luncheon for faculty and staff in each division.

Family Day: plans and executes an outdoor "street fair" with games and musical entertainment, as well as a school-wide art show.

Father/Son Committee: plans and promotes social and service-related activities for boys and their dads.

Gift Wrap: coordinates annual fall gift wrap sale.

Gilman Exchange: sort, tag, and display merchandise as well as staff and publicize the Gilman Exchange.

Grandparents Day: coordinates Lower School grandparent visit day, serving as hosts and greeters.

Hospitality: hosts refreshments at important School events.

Middle School Social Events: organizes mulVolunteer Motherti-school activity nights.

New Parent Welcoming Committee: helps familiarize new parents with Gilman.

Ninth/Tenth Grade Program: plans social event/fundraiser

Parents Network: assist with events of this coalition of parents representing local area independent schools.

Parent Partnership for Safe Behavior: plans opportunities for parents to exchange ideas about behavior issues and resources.

Photo Days: assists with individual school photo and make-up picture days.

Prom Coordination: helps organizes Pre- and Post-Prom events.

Red Cross Blood Drive: coordinates and distributes morning pastries and luncheon sandwiches during Blood Drive.

Speaker Night: coordinates an annual lecture.

Student-Parent Directory: manages the project that produces a directory of all Gilman parents' contact information.

Welcoming Receptions: hosts at "getting-to-know-you" gathering at one's home.


Additional Volunteer Opportunities

Class Representative: serve as "room moms and dads," garnering support from parents and guardians for various class related activities.

Library: assist in any one of the School's three libraries.


Lower School

Art: assist in classroom, support the Picture Perfect Parent Program, or help arrange the Art Show.

Design and Woodworking: assist in the shop.

Music: share musical interests and talents.

Recess: monitor recess.


Middle School

Community Service Committee: organizes special community service projects.

Driver for Field Trips/Service Projects: drives!

Parent Dialogue Night Facilitator: facilitates small group discussions.


Upper School

Chaperone for Social Activities: chaperones various dances and social events.

The Parents Committee on Community and Diversity: supports the School's cultural and ethnic activities and events.

Bookstore: assists in bookstore.

The Parents Council of Greater Baltimore is a non-profit organization of parent representatives from the Baltimore area independent schools.
