Mission Statement
The primary mission of the Writing Center is to serve students.
- We help students gain confidence and skill in writing.
- We enable students to gain insight into their processes, problems, and potential as writers.
- We help students learn to analyze and discuss writing.
- We create an environment in which students feel comfortable asking for and receiving assistance.
In addition, the Writing Center exists to support faculty.
- We respond to teachers’ needs for support in the teaching of writing across the Upper School curriculum.
- We offer ideas and resources to enrich and promote the teaching of writing and the use of writing as a tool for learning in all disciplines.
- We offer support for faculty in their own writing: administrative, scholarly, and creative.
Finally, the Writing Center exists to establish connections between members of the community of writers both within and outside the Upper School at Gilman.
- We provide seminars, classroom visits, readings, and other special events with professional writers.
- We encourage and organize student participation in local writing events.
