Athletic Program
Physical education and athletics have been a part of a Gilman education since the School's earliest days, embedded in its founding principles of helping boys grow in mind, body, and spirit. Sports participation is an effective way to teach students about good character, discipline, teamwork, and the benefits of a healthy, fit body. And it is a great way for boys to have fun. All students, from pre-first to 12th grade, take part in some form of physical education every school day, beginning in the early grades with an emphasis on skill development and cooperative games, and including in later years intramural programs and a far-ranging and competitive program in interscholastic sports.
Gilman's athletic program aims to:
- Promote self-discipline and responsibility, and teach the value of sustained effort.
- Develop teamwork, good sportsmanship, and a competitive spirit.
- Build school pride and unity.
- Develop fitness and athletic skills through physical education, intramural participation, and interscholastic team sports.
- Teach the lifelong benefits of sports and fitness for physical and mental well-being.
