Traditional Academic Courses
Each of the following courses may be taken for strengthening, for review, or where indicated, for credit.
English and Study Skills
All summer session English courses deal with the various skills of the language itself-grammar, composition, word study, spelling, punctuation, and where appropriate, with literature.
English Workshop 6–7
(1 hour) for students entering grade 6 or 7. This course concentrates on basic English grammar (the parts of speech, the sentence, prepositional phrases, and modifying clauses), punctuation, spelling, vocabulary building, and the development of the topic sentence.

Composition Workshop 7-8
(1 hour) for students entering grade 7 or 8. This course, intended for students who have already demonstrated competence in grammar, spelling, and punctuation, concentrates on strengthening the composition skills required in descriptive, narrative, and expository writing.

Composition Workshop 9–10
(1 hour) for students entering grade 9 or 10. The aim of this course is to develop the students' ability to express themselves clearly and thoroughly in written English. It is intended that the students advance their writing techniques by organizing ideas logically or chronologically, writing in succinct paragraphs, using examples to illustrate statements, and conveying ideas to the reader in as much specificity and detail as possible. Furthermore, the students are required to study English grammar to enable them to vary sentence structure, use formal and informal English in the correct contexts, punctuate their writing according to the guidelines of standard English, and use phrases and clauses correctly to improve the fluidity of their writing. Over the course of the class, the students write four five paragraph analytical papers and one creative paper, all of which are re-drafted and revised through a process of peer editing, in addition to daily writing exercises on formal and informal subjects.

English S.A.T. Preparation
For students entering grades 10–12. The course has been modified to comply with the new SAT test. Techniques for taking the English section of this test will be included in the course. Enrollment is limited to seven students per section. Each section meets eight hours per week. Monday classes are set aside for essay writing and grammar. (This course is taught by Anton Vishio of the Gilman Upper School)

Creative Writing
(3 hours) for students entering grades 3–5. In this three-week enrichment course the students will incorporate arts and crafts and creative writing. They will use their creations as vehicles to publish a marvelous book of stories and poems for each author to take home. Each piece of writing will follow the five-step process and will be based on a creative project. If you love to write and want to take time to listen to the whispers of your muse, then this is the class for you.

Developmental Reading and Study Skills
Grades 9–11 (1 hour) for students entering grade 9 ,10, and 11. The objective of this course is to increase the students’ mastery of basic skills, study skills, and self-management skills. To meet this objective, the students will read a variety of materials, including excerpts from textbooks, articles, short stories, and novels; take notes on reading assignments, lectures and class discussions; write five-paragraph essays, a letter, and a short story; do research in books and on the Internet; engage in effective class participation; and give class presentations.

Foreign Language Tutorials
Private tutoring will be available in French, Spanish, and Latin. Tutoring fee: $55 per hour for one student, $50 per hour for two students, $45 per hour for three or more students.

Science Tutorials (Physical Science, Biology)****for Gilman students only
Private tutoring will be available in Physical Science and Biology for Gilman students who need to meet academic conditions during the summer. Tutoring fee: $55 per hour for one student, $50 per hour for two students, $45 per hour for three or more students.

Math and English Tutorials
Private tutoring will also be available in Math, and English for students entering grades 6 - 12. Tutoring fee: $55 per hour for one student, $50 per hour for two students, $45 per hour for three or more students.

Driver’s Education
Gilman will be offering Driver’s Education classes this summer with Sensible Driving School. The instructors will be Mr. Amin Flowers (owner) and Mr. Carter Bayton.
Session 1: June 23 – July 7, (Friday, July 4th class will be made up on Monday July 7th)
Session 2: July 21 – August 1
Meets Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 12 noon. Six hours of driving time to be arranged with the driving instructor.

History
American History (High School Level)
This course will seek to provide a rich, balanced, and thought provoking examination of our American past. We will examine multiple factors that have shaped our history: political, economic, social, religious, intellectual, cultural. A number of themes will be followed throughout the term: the emergence of the American character and American institutions; the struggle for national unity and identity amidst cultural diversity and conflict; the powerful reform impulse in American society; the conflicts between freedom and order, between individualism and conformism, between progressivism and nostalgia for the past, between state and federal power. Important periods covered include: The Colonial Era, The American Revolution,The Constitution, The Early Republic, Jacksonian Democracy, American Slavery, The Civil War, Civil Rights, The Cold War.

Mathematics
Algebra I
(credit: 2 hours) for students who have completed grade 8.

Algebra I Review
A three week “mini-course” that reviews the basic principles of algebra. Not offered for credit.
Session I of Algebra I Review The first review session is best suited for the student who completed an Algebra I course with a B or A. This student will be enrolling in an Algebra II course this fall. Topics reviewed will be polynomials, factoring quadratic polynomials, using factoring techniques, the TI-83 graphing calculator, and the quadratic formula to solve second degree equations.

Session II of Algebra I Review The second session is best suited for the student who completed Algebra I with a grade of a C or less. This session is also good for the student who completed Algebra I over a year ago. The second session student may be enrolling in either Algebra I or II in the fall. Topics reviewed will include performing operations on algebraic expressions, solving linear equations with one variable, graphing the solution set of a linear equation, as well as learning to use TI-83 graphing calculator.
