While completing her doctor of philosophy in Spanish with a special focus on the literature and culture of Latin America at The University of Virginia (UVA), Karina Baptista was a graduate teaching assistant in Spanish and designed a curriculum for summer abroad trips for undergraduates. Before receiving her doctorate, Karina earned a Master of Arts in Spanish from Yale University, a Master of Arts in Hispanic studies from the University of Kentucky, and a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from Saint Mary’s College of California. Outside of her studies, she was a language support specialist at the School of Continuing Education at UVA and continues to be a translator. She speaks Spanish and Italian, and she has reading knowledge of French and Latin.

Why do you enjoy teaching at Gilman?
I enjoy teaching at Gilman because the of positive energy the boys transmit. Their readiness to be silly, goofy, and playful makes teaching fun.
What inspired you to become a teacher?
My best teachers inspired me to become a teacher.
