College Tour 2020
Let the college journey begin! Rising juniors and seniors are invited to join Matt Herman and Justin Baker from the Gilman College Counseling Office for the 2020 College Tour: University of Virginia, Roanoke College, Elon University, Wake Forest University, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, Duke University, and Richmond University, June 9 - 12, 2020.
The college search process is an exciting, educational journey. College campuses are vibrant places where interesting scholars are busy doing important and fascinating work. To visit these places is to imagine oneself in the future, as "studying this" and "doing that" in a specific place and time. Beyond all else, this journey allows students to consider big and abstract questions: Who am I? What do I want to study? Where do I want to be? Who do I want to become?
The mission of this tour is to help rising juniors and seniors navigate this journey by advising them as they start to make distinctions between their educational preferences and different "types" of schools. This begins, before the visit, with research. Before students board the bus, they will learn how to effectively research schools online. Students will then tour different kinds of schools in a variety of settings. Through the process of note taking and guided discussions, students will identify how a school's mission, culture, community, course curriculum, extracurricular life, and graduate outcomes fit with their burgeoning preferences.
In the end, visiting college campuses is fun and informative. By the end of the tour, students will have enjoyed time with their peers visiting schools that offer a variety of pathways for students to become, as Gilman's mission states, "men of character and integrity who have the skills and ability to make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work."
The trip is limited to 30 students on a first come first served basis.
