Lower School Summer Reading Letter, Grades 2 - 5

Dear Gilman Lower School Families,

It is time for Summer Reading! At Gilman, we encourage our students to read over the summer to keep their reading skills sharp and develop into lifelong readers. And the more you read, the better reader and writer you become! This summer your son should read a range of books at his reading and interest level. Boys should also read in a variety of formats including print books, audiobooks, and eBooks. Your son does not have to read all of the books on his own—parents, older siblings, etc. may read to him.

Students entering Second, Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades have one required title for summer reading (different titles for each grade), while the remaining selections are free choice. We recommend reading the required title in August so the story details remain fresh and accessible for the start of the school year. The boys will have an assignment to complete related to the book.

While the library is closed, we recommend you use our Overdrive Sora system and download an ebook to your own device! Students can borrow titles using their Gilman issued username and password. Digital books can be enjoyed on a computer, tablet, smartphone or eReader device. Read right in your internet browser or download selections using the free OverDrive/Sora app. At the end of the lending period, titles automatically expire so there are never any books to return!

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments. Reading during the summer should be a fun activity—we encourage the boys to get outside with their books, read in a different environment, take an adventure, and explore!

Have a wonderful summer filled with great books,

Melissa Da
