Lower School Summer Reading Letter, Grades PK - 1

Dear Gilman Lower School Families,

It is time for Summer Reading! At Gilman, we encourage our students to read over the summer to keep their reading skills sharp and develop into lifelong readers. This summer your son should read a variety of books at his reading and interest level. He should read in a range of formats including print books, audiobooks, and eBooks. Your son does not have to read all of the books on his own—parents, older siblings, etc. may read to him.

Students entering Pre-Kindergarten through First grade do not have any required titles. We have enclosed a Summer Reading BINGO Board which can help you choose books to read over the summer. If you would like ideas for free choice reading, we have enclosed reading lists. For more suggestions, we recommend visiting your public library or your favorite bookseller. Boys should keep track of their reading and return the completed BINGO Boards to school by Friday, September 4, 2020.

While the library is closed, we recommend you use our Overdrive system and download an ebook to your own device! Students can borrow titles using their Gilman issued username and password. Digital books can be enjoyed on a computer, tablet, smartphone or eReader device. Read right in your internet browser or download selections using the free OverDrive/Sora app. At the end of the lending period, titles automatically expire so there are never any books to return!

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments. Reading during the summer should be a fun activity—we encourage the boys to get outside with their books, read in a different environment, take an adventure, and explore!

Have a wonderful summer filled with great books!
