Outward Bound

Gilman has partnered with the Baltimore Chesapeake Bay Outward Bound School to provide students with an opportunity for challenge, team building, and self-discovery. In past two years, specifically, we have expanded this partnership by taking the Freshmen class, along with a group of rising seniors, on a 5-day backpacking expedition along the Appalachian Trail. Our initial plan was to use this expedition as a way to build class camaraderie before the Freshmen year, but we determined that an end of Freshmen year expedition will allow us to more properly prepare the boys and provide the foundation for a student designed service project in the Sophomore year.

To best prepare and build upon their journey, Gilman and Outward Bound partner in the delivery of Outward Bound’s Character Curriculum© in Gilman classrooms. Character skills can be taught-both in the classroom and in nature’s physically and socially challenging environments. Through the curriculum we employ experiential learning tools that Outward Bound instructors have used in the field for decades and expand them into teachable, classroom based modules. Through this powerful partnership, Gilman boys will be empowered by learning how to persevere through challenge, manage conflict, show compassion, and solve problems. This unique approach equips students with the life and leadership skills to transfer learning and enact positive change in their own lives and communities.

Film of Gilman's 2016 Expedition

"Together with their crew, Gilman students faced the rigors and responsibilities of expeditionary travel. They navigated the trail and the stages of group development. They prepared meals for their crew while their own stomachs growled. They helped create and maintain a positive culture despite sore feet and homesickness. Crew-cohesion inspired these students to discover new depths of resolve and ability; we hope they never settle for less and are pleased to share with you the outcomes of this program."
