With a 1-0 count in the bottom of the second inning, Chicago White Sox right fielder Gavin Sheets '14 lined a splitfinger fastball from Minnesota Twins starter Kenta Maeda into left field for a single. It was Gavin's first major league hit in his first career at bat. He added a double and two RBIs and caught three balls in the outfield as the White Sox topped the Twins 7-6. Gavin, who is Gilman's first alumnus to reach the major leagues, is actually in his second stint with the White Sox — he was called up earlier this month but did not get into a game. Update: After being sent back down to the Triple-A Charlotte Knights on August 9, Gavin was called back up to Chicago on September 1.
Update: Gavin was named to the White Sox's 26-man playoff roster. He started three of four games against Houston in the American League Divisional Series and collected four hits, including a home run in game four. The Astros won the series 3-1 bringing the White Sox's season to an end. We look forward to seeing Gavin back in action next spring!
