Five wrestlers represented Gilman well at the 2022 National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) High School Nationals held March 25-27 in Virginia Beach, VA, with brothers Emmitt Sherlock '25 and Tyson Sherlock '24 walking away as first and second place finalists in their respective divisions.
Emmitt emerged victorious in the Freshmen 126 lbs Final, winning 1-0 against Illinois' Peyton Cox, and took first place in his bracket of 95 wrestlers. In the Sophomore 126 lbs Final, Tyson competed strongly against Pennsylvania's Gunnar Myers, who edged him out with a 2-1 final score, placing Tyson in second, a strong showing within his bracket of 110 wrestlers.
"I'm proud because a lot of coaches have put a lot of knowledge and time into me, and I was able to use it this weekend to help me win a national title," said Emmitt in an interview with VarsitySportsNetwork.com, with Tyson sharing, "I'm proud that my brother and I both got to wrestle side by side in the finals."
In addition to the Sherlock brothers, Zac Glory '25, Gabriel Smith '25, and Nick Haughey '24 left it all on the mat this weekend, and Head Wrestling Coach Bryn Holmes is excited about the program's future. "With the way these young wrestlers are competing, I'm hoping we will continue to get better," said Holmes. "These athletes have set a new bar for Gilman Wrestling and, at this point, the sky's the limit."
