August 2018

FROM ROLAND AVENUE

Each September, Lee Child sits down to write the next installment in his Jack Reacher series. After a few months of hard work, he has a story that will no doubt rise to the top of the bestseller lists. I don't have the luxury of that sort of creative faucet that can just be switched on on-demand. If left to my own musings, these pages would be nearly empty … or at the very least, incredibly late. Thankfully, you — my fellow Gilman alumni — continue to dazzle with wonderful accomplishments and achievements, making the preparation of these newsletters an exercise in editing rather than writing. With apologies for all the great stories that we were not able to include, read below to learn about the maker movement at Gilman, a football camp that goes well beyond the game, the accelerating Gilman networking efforts, and more.

MEETING THE MAKERS

Image

The Bulletin hit mailboxes earlier this month. Included inside are features on how Gilman has embraced the maker movement, David Brewster '79's assembly on emotional intelligence, the Finney-Greene Program, and Founders Day 2018, as well as school news, alumni updates, athletic accomplishments, and an update on the First Things First campaign. You can read the issue online here.

GOING BEYOND THE BASICS

Brandon Copeland '09's talent on the football field has been well-established. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Copeland is turning heads in training camp as the New York Jets get ready for the 2018 NFL season. Before reporting to training camp, however, Copeland returned to Gilman to host his third annual Beyond the Basics Football Camp. Football drills were only part of the story, as the day included community service and an emphasis on the importance of giving back. Learn more and see pictures and videos from the camp here.

THE GILMAN NETWORK AT WORK, PART 2

Image

On July 26, more than 20 alumni gathered at Cafe Centro in New York City for coffee and conversation. The meeting brought New York-based alumni with significant work experience together with college-aged alumni eager to advance their careers in business and finance. For the young alums, this was a great opportunity to learn about these industries and find opportunities that may be available in the area. For the older alums — who come from prestigious firms including BBH Capital Partners, Bienville Capital, The Blackstone Group, BTIG, Deloitte Corporate Finance, Evercore, Merrill Lynch, and New State Capital Partners — the breakfast offered an opportunity to recruit top-tier talent as well as reconnect and network with fellow alumni leaders. See images from the event here. This was the second of two recent career networking breakfasts. The first was held at Greenspring Associates in Owings Mills, MD.

The Evolution of the Gilman Seal

Our coat-of-arms, or shield, was designed in 1907 by Hamlet S. Philpot, Greek, Latin, and History Master from 1904 to 1913. The shield's heraldic emblems represent founder Anne Galbraith Carey's notion to educate boys in mind, body and spirit. Learn more about the meaning of each element and its visual evolution over time.
