Visual Arts
Gilman's strong visual arts program encourages boys to grow their artistic personas. The opportunities available to our students are as limitless as the imagination, and their experiences mold the boys into well-rounded young men with a lifelong appreciation for the arts.
The visual arts program encourages boys to explore art through various media, supporting them, at all ages, to appreciate art, to think creatively, to observe the world around them, and, no matter their artistic skill, to understand how artists create illusions of light, space, and emotion in their work. From creating Viking shields and helmets to studying Cezanne to working with a visiting professional artist, boys learn how art is an expression of both the human condition and of self.
Art at Gilman comprises everything from standard studio offerings in drawing, painting, ceramics, and woodworking to work in photography, digital media, and architectural design. Orchestrated to complement Gilman's rigorous academic curriculum, the art program in each division engages boys in their world in an aesthetically meaningful and challenging way. At all levels, teachers introduce students to materials and procedures that facilitate an ongoing understanding of art-making and its role in our culture.
Whether working on a thematic mural in the Lower School, exploring key social issues through art-making in the Middle School, or developing a portfolio of self-directed work for an Upper School thesis exhibition, the importance of art in one's life is actively conveyed from the first Lower School experience to the final senior art show.

The HIVE — Hub for Innovation, Visual Arts, and Engineering — is a reimagined area on campus that came to fruition in the fall of 2025. This dynamic and creative space, located in the basement level of Carey Hall, comprises three classrooms and a common area, intended to foster hands-on learning and exploration. Equipped with state-of-the-art tools for design and woodworking (D&W), digital fabrication, and robotics, the HIVE offers students and faculty a collaborative environment to prototype ideas, build projects, work with sculpture materials, and explore interdisciplinary design.
-
Lower School classes enjoy a dedicated D&W room tailored to introduce our youngest boys to tools, materials, and creative building.
-
The Middle and Upper School workspace has been updated to include two dedicated classrooms — a clean fabrication area for sewing and the Glowforge as well as a streamlined D&W space equipped with tools and machinery to support efficient, creative work.
-
The Upper School robotics space has been expanded to include a larger classroom, an area for various robotics arenas, and a separate clean fabrication space for a Fusion Pro Laser cutter, Wazer, soldering equipment, and other tools for digital fabrication, robotics, and STEM.
Whether engineering a robot, crafting custom furniture, creating an expressive sculpture, or experimenting with digital fabrication, the HIVE is a place where imagination meets making as students learn to invent and build with confidence and curiosity.
