About Francis "Boo" Smith '70
A gifted athlete, dedicated educator, and passionate advocate for the arts, Francis "Boo" Whitaker Smith '70 left a lasting mark on generations of students through his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to excellence. A proud 13-year man of Gilman School and an All-American defenseman on the University of Virginia's 1972 national championship lacrosse team, Boo's legacy extended far beyond the field. Over the course of a decades-long career in education, primarily teaching art history, he inspired students in the classroom and on the sidelines, first at the John Carroll School and later at his alma mater, where he returned to teach, coach, and serve as Dean of Students.
Boo brought the same tenacity and joy to coaching as he did to teaching. He led championship teams in lacrosse, wrestling, and especially squash, all while fostering a deep appreciation for character, teamwork, and perseverance. A gifted photographer and enthusiastic supporter of student life, Boo shared his love of the visual arts with the Gilman community and remained a devoted and respected presence on campus until his passing.
The Francis "Boo" Smith '70 Memorial Lecture for the Arts celebrates his enduring belief in the transformative power of artistic expression. Through this annual event, Gilman honors Boo's vibrant spirit and commitment to nurturing the whole student — mind, body, and spirit.
