Despite his enormous success on the baseball field, Maryland senior first baseman Maxwell Costes '18 has been plagued by dark thoughts for years. As an outlet to combat this depression, he regularly puts pen to paper and writes. This practice has even earned him the nickname of "Pen Griffey" from close friend and classmate Thomas Booker '18.

Maxwell — and his bat — helped lead the Terps to a No. 15 seed in the 64-team NCAA Tournament bracket and earned them the opportunity to host a regional for the first time in program history. In five playoff games before they were eliminated, he notched eight hits, six RBIs, and one home run in a game against Wake Forest in which his former Gilman teammate Pierce Bennett '19 also homered.
