Football provided extra excitement … literally. The Hounds defeated Concordia Prep 27-21 in an overtime thriller. Gilman jumped out to a 13-0 lead courtesy of a second quarter touchdown toss from senior captain QB Matt Parker to sophomore Jackson Cheatham (the Hounds leading receiver on the day with 53 yards). Junior Dejuan Lane extended the lead with a sensational kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter. On a day when both offenses struggled to move the ball, the Greyhound defense was the headline, holding the Saints scoreless through almost three full quarters. Captain Ahmir Crawley led the way, dominating the line of scrimmage at Nose Guard, recording multiple tackles for a loss in the first half to set the tone. Linebackers Jay Wilkerson and Carson Mingo cleaned up the second level, holding a physical Concordia backfield in check.

After Concodia rallied late to take a 21-13 lead, the Hounds mounted a late drive, scoring on an 18-yard strike from Parker to senior Matt Morelli in the right corner of the south endzone. With 1:10 to play, the all important two-point conversion followed. Parker fired a strike to the slanting Lane who made a tough catch to tie the game.

In overtime, Concordia kept the ball on the ground, and a third down rush moved the ball to the two. However, a hold on the play created an interesting decision for our first year head coach Scott Van Zile. Coach Van Zile accepted the penalty, moving Concordia back but replaying third down. The decision proved prescient, as Concodia's pass on the following play was intercepted by Lane, giving Gilman a possession to win it with either score.

Knowing a field goal would win the game, the Hounds stuck to the ground game, and junior Sebastian Chaney took a third down carry over right guard, wound back to his left, broke two tackles, and dove into the end zone for the final margin. What a way to kickoff the season! Gilman is back in action at Curley on Friday.

Soccer

Gilman came out poised and prepared, and they played the Dons to a draw through the half. Loyola got on the board seven minutes into the second half, and the Greyhounds spent the remainder of the game pushing the action looking for the equalizer. The energy and focus created several scoring opportunities in the closing minutes, but Loyola was able to maintain the one goal advantage through the finish.
