Cross Country

The Greyhound runners spent the week practicing hard in preparation for this week’s Greenspring Invitational at St. Paul’s. Good luck to all the Hound runners!

Football

Football headed up 95 to New Jersey Saturday to take on Lawrenceville. The Hounds struck first, as Dejuan Lane intercepted a pass on the first possession of the game and ran it back for a touchdown and a 6-0 lead. Early on, Gilman’s tenacious defensive line, behind Ahmir Crawley, Cam Custis, Miles Roberts, Bryce Wilson, and third down pass rusher Evan Quintero (in for an injured Yasir Supreme) rebuffed the Lawrenceville ground game and provided the Greyhound offense good field position. As the afternoon waned, though, Lawrencevile took to the air repeatedly, throwing for over 400 yards and several long scores. The Greyhound offense battled all afternoon, as Matt Parker led the Hounds in both rushing and passing, accounting for four TD passes as Gilman tried to keep pace. Griffin Graham had a breakout performance at receiver, hauling in two touchdown catches, and Cam Brown made a spectacular catch for another long touchdown. 

The Hounds look to rebound this Friday at home against Boys Latin. Gilman will honor Danny Senft prior to the game for his forty years of service to the school, and Danny will serve as an honorary game captain. Please plan to join us before kickoff to cheer him on. Go Hounds!

Soccer

Soccer dropped close games at Spalding and home against Calvert Hall last week, and lost an out of conference match on Saturday at Landon. 

Traveling to Spalding is always a challenge, and conditions were tough on a slick turf field. Gilman controlled the action for most of the first half, pinning the ball in their offensive end looking to capitalize. Spalding broke through, though, with three minutes remaining in the half, countering nicely off of a Gilman set piece. In a physical second half, the Hounds were forced to play down a man for much of the remainder of the contest, and could not find the net for the equalizer.

Friday, in front of an energized crowd enjoying the beautiful weather and the mouth-watering barbeque, Gilman pushed top-rated and nationally ranked Calvert Hall early. On the same pitch where Gilman upset the Hall a year ago, Calvert Hall this time turned back three early scoring chances and finally turned the tables, tickling the twine on their only good scoring chance of the first half. Despite the eventual 2-0 loss, an evenly matched second half featuring solid team play on both ends of the pitch by the Hounds should provide energy for Gilman heading into another week of tough conference matchups.

Volleyball

The Volley-hounds faced an action packed week, with home matches against perennial powers Mt. St. Joe and Loyola. On Wednesday, the Hounds soundly rebuffed the Gaels 3-1. Middle blocker Jack Amiot anchored the action in the first set, providing the offense, and the Hounds signature defense and passing proved the difference. Jesse Zhong helped libero Seth Lindt solidify the back row defense, and, after dropping the third set to the resilient Gaels, hitters Duncan Perry and Luca Pavlovich provided the offense, and Colin Mcpherson’s all-around excellence steadied the home-standing Hounds as they pulled away with a convincing win.

Friday night, in front of an ebullient tropical-themed student fan section, proved to be a different story. The Hound’s vaunted defense took a bit to get going, and Loyola took advantage, racing out to a first set win. Danny Leikus provided a spark off the bench, with multiple blocks, a couple of kills, and lots of energy to try to rally the Hounds. Loyola completed the 3-set sweep, though, and Gilman finds itself tied for first in what will surely be another entertaining year at the top of the A conference.

Water Polo

Gilman traveled to the Naval Academy over the weekend for the Battle of the Beltways, continuing Water Polo’s canvassing of the mid-atlantic in search of stiff competition. The Hounds came out scrappy and unified, and scored an excellent 9-7 win over Gonzaga to open the tournament. Gilman would drop the second match of their tournament, though, 11-6 to a powerful North Penn team. Gilman looks ahead to the start of conference play this week, with Calvert Hall on the road and a huge home tilt against archrival Loyola Wednesday.
