Cross Country

At the Greenspring Invitational hosted by St. Paul’s, Gilman’s depth shone through, leading the Hounds to victory. Ryan Collins ran 17:39 on the hilly, challenging course, winning the race outright. Fellow junior Nathan Koshy took second, with Cameron Amiot just behind, finishing fourth.

On Saturday, the distance-Hounds traveled to Big Spring High School, just outside of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, for the Bulldog Invitational. Collins set a new PR with a 16:36, and every varsity runner ran sub-19 minutes in a strong display of the team’s depth. The team finished seventh in a group of more than 30 schools. 

Gilman travels to Georgetown Prep Saturday to defend their crown from last year’s GP Classic. 

Football

Football played to a packed house Friday on a beautiful afternoon against Boys' Latin. The Lakers started quickly, racing to a 10-0 lead in the first half as Gilman worked to settle in. The Hounds caught a break in the second quarter though, when Cam Brown was “Johnny on the spot,” alertly picking up a shanked punt and racing 35 yards for a touchdown to draw Gilman close. Slowly but surely, the relentless Gilman defense wore down the Laker front. Cam Custis and Ahmir Crawley asserted their will, accounting for seven tackles for loss between them, with Ahmir adding a blocked punt (his second of the year) in the second half. Carson Mingo, Jay Wilkerson, and Ian Evans also shut down the run game from their linebacker positions, limiting Boys' Latin to 38 yards rushing on 26 attempts for the afternoon. On offense, Matt Parker was an efficient 12-21 for 154 yards and a touchdown. Dejuan Lane led the receivers; his six catches covered 76 yards and the touchdown, and Dejuan added a late interception (one of three forced turnovers by the Hounds D) to secure the win. Clayton Baddley chipped in with 50 receiving yards, and running backs Sebastian Chaney and Marcus Walker each carried nine times and accounted for close to 140 yards on the ground, much in the second half as Gilman asserted their will on the line of scrimmage. A last gasp rally from the Lakers ended when Amir Arnold intercepted a BL pass in the endzone and alertly took a knee.

Gilman opens A conference play Friday at home against Pallotti. Toe meets leather at 4 p.m.

Soccer

Gilman took on a talented Concordia Prep team at home last week. Despite controlling the pace and possession throughout, regulation expired with the two teams knotted in a scoreless battle. Concordia finally broke through with just 15 seconds remaining in the second OT period; a heartbreaking loss for the Hounds after a long afternoon of relentless effort.

Showing terrific resolve, Gilman bounced back in convincing fashion Friday. Traveling to Sinclair Lane in East Baltimore to play traditional A conference power Curley, Gilman piled up the offense early, with Kris Mitchell and Elijah Brijbasi finding the back of the net before Devon Nixon added a beautiful header to lead 3-2 at the half. Colin Broadbent added a second half goal off of a marvelous find from Brijbasi, and GK George Guyton and the back line locked down the Friars for the final 4-2 margin of victory. 

The soccer Hounds have a grueling three-game league schedule this week, including a Wednesday home match with the Eagles from Owings Mills.

Volleyball

The volley-Hounds picked up dominant wins over St. Paul’s, 3-0, and Boys' Latin, 3-1, last week after outlasting Calvert Hall on Monday in a five set affair. Monday’s game was dramatic for a lot of reasons — the game had to be moved from the Arena to the Old Gym after the torrential rain outside found its way onto the court during the second set. Gilman handled the change of venue (thanks in part to the quick work of the Gilman JV team, who rushed to set up the nets in the Old Gym) with aplomb. Calvert Hall’s offense was relentless, but Gilman passed, dug, and defended better, especially in the fourth and fifth sets, to overcome the Hall. Danny Leikus came off the bench in the Old Gym to rally the squad with blocks and energy.

The match at St. Paul’s was free of rain delays or drama, as the Hounds controlled the action from the start. Charlie Slater and Leikus contributed to put the third set away and seal the victory.

On Friday, the first set with the Lakers was a close one, and BL took an early lead and held on in the second set to even the match. From there on, though, Gilman controlled the action and cruised to a 3-1 win. Luca Pavlovich and Jack Amiot provided the offense, with Duncan Perry chipping in on offense and defense. 

Water Polo

Water Polo had a 2-0 conference week. Playing at Calvert Hall, the Hounds took a commanding 9-0 lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 18-12 win. Lots of players logged quality time in the water, helping prepare the Hounds for the rest of league play. 

Gilman faced a huge home test later in the week, hosting defending champion Loyola. Gilman controlled possession in the first half, but struggled to put the ball in the net, keeping Loyola’s hopes afloat. However, the second half was a different story, as the Hounds pulled away from a convincing 17-11 win, making an early statement in the A conference. Ryan Coleman and Zach Minking combined for three goals in the effort. 

The Hounds are back in the pool against Spalding this week before heading to the always competitive Beast of the East tournament in Philadelphia Friday.
