Cross Country

The racing Hounds traveled to South River HS for the annual Seahawk Invitational on Saturday. Gilman runners had a chance to test themselves against some of the best teams in Maryland and southern Pennsylvania. The team fared well, finishing sixth overall at the varsity level, and an even more impressive third as a JV. Junior Roan Collins showed out, placing 15th in a field of 219. Sophomore Jemmel Green also ran well, finishing 28th overall. 

Football

Football continued their impressive start with a decisive 21-3 win Friday on Sinclair Lane in East Baltimore over Curley. Gilman won all three phases, combining suffocating defense with big plays on offense and two crucial kick blocks on special teams to account for the final margin. While the offense started slow, the defense kept the Hounds in a tight ballgame in the first half, trailing 3-0 at intermission. Curley is a run-heavy squad, and the stout Greyhound defensive line anchored by Ahmir Crawley, Miles Roberts, Kam Custis, and Bryce Wilson frustrated the Friars all afternoon. Coming out of the half, Gilman struck quickly, with Matt Parker finding Cam Brown on a fade route for a 41-yard scoring strike. Parker beat Curely’s man-coverage again in the third quarter, finding a wide-open Jackson Cheatham for a 21-yard TD. Crawley was again a one-man wrecking crew, finishing with multiple tackles for a loss, and he added a blocked punt in the second half as well. As Curley attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, Gilman’s Dejuan Lane came off the edge and laid out to block a field goal attempt. Ian Evans, continuing to make big plays a week after stripping the ball from a Concordia receiver, shut down Curley’s final rally with a 4th down sack in front of the Hounds bench. Running backs Marcus Walker, with a team leading 80 yards rushing, and Sebastian Chaney put the game away with relentless downhill running to take the final minutes off the clock.

The 2-0 Hounds are riding high. Coach Van Zile was named the Baltimore Touchdown Club coach of the week in recognition of the outstanding team effort at Curley, and Gilman travels to New Jersey Saturday to take on Lawrenceville eying a possible 3-0 start.

Soccer

Gilman’s road through a brutal A conference schedule began in earnest last week with games at conference foe St. Paul’s and a Friday home match with neighboring Boys' Latin. At St. Paul’s, Gilman shook off a sleepy first ten minutes to catch fire, netting four goals before halftime. Elijah Brijbasi showed his typical sensational footwork and preternatural ball skills, deeking multiple Crusader defenders to net the first goal. He followed immediately, finding the back of the net again only moments later. A couple minutes later, defender Chase Spurrier lined up a free kick from well over midfield, and perfectly directed the ball to the head of forward Devon Nixon for a breathtaking score. Nixon added a second header before the half off of a pretty cross, and the Hounds were able to use the second half to play many reserves, getting valuable conference experience sure to pay off later in the year.

It was tougher sledding Friday against Boys' Latin, as the two teams battled through scoreless opening minutes. With the game tied at the half, intensity was high during the second half until Josh Melancon found the back of the net off of a Brijbasi feed with just fifteen minutes remaining to earn the 1-0 win.

The Hound travel to Spalding Wednesday in search of another notch in their A conference belt.

Volleyball

The Volley-Hounds got off to a 2-0 start in the league last week, with a 3-1 win over Curley and a 3 set sweep of Friends. Against Curley, the Hounds dropped the first set, but cruised to three straight set wins following the setback. Setter Chase Tompins served thirteen straight points in the 4th set, and opposite hitters Charlie Slater and Luca Pavolvich provided impressive offense. Duncan Perry also played well in his varsity debut.

Against Friends, Danny Leikus and Ali Akpek took center stage, providing highlight moments in the straight sets win.

Water Polo

The Greyhounds traveled to Philadelphia over the weekend for the annual Philmore Cup where the Hounds had the opportunity to test themselves against some of the best teams on the east coast. Gilman dropped the first contest to perennial power Haverford, 15-7. The team found their offensive cohesion quickly, though, in the following wins against Germantown (13-9), Malvern Prep (17-7), and Penn Charter (10-8), and a suffocating defense led by terrific goaltending from Nick Lutzky helped solidify an excellent showing in Pennsylvania for the Greyhounds.
