Here’s the latest recap from the courts, mats, rink, pool, and track:

Basketball: Gilman was set to play Glenelg Country this past Monday, but the weather had other ideas and the game was postponed. Next, the Hounds took on B Conference power Gerstell. A slow start le to a 12 point deficit, but the Hounds responded with a big comeback effort. The tremendous second half effort fell short, though, with Gerstell surviving with a 69-63 win. Jalen Rucker led the way with 17 points and Malik Missouri added 12 points and 7 rebounds.

The Hounds looked to rebound with Silent Night last Friday. Backed by the support of a huge and electric student section, Gilman controlled the first half, with Jalen Rucker ending the silence scoring the salient sixth point. However, Annapolis Area Christian School went on a run in the fourth quarter and pulled away for the win. Rucker led the way for the Hounds again with 21 points and Jordan Foster had a strong performance with 18 points.

The Hounds look to bounce back from their losing streak facing Boys Latin and Mt. St. Joes this week. Gilman currently sits sixth in their division with a conference record of 4 - 5. With a few big wins this week the Hounds could find themselves in fourth place and in the playoff hunt.

Ice Hockey: The Ice Hounds are on a roll of late, reeling off three straight victories. They beat St. Peter and Paul twice, 8-3 and 8-1, and followed up with a convincing 5-1 win over BL. Strong defense, consistent goaltending, and opportunistic offense have Gilman well positioned at 6-2-1 with a huge contest against Loyola looming Friday at Mt. Pleasant.

Indoor Track: The Track team finished their season Friday night at the PG Sports Complex with a hard fought second-place finish in the championship meet. This follows a regular season championship for the Hounds, marking another year of Indoor dominance for Coach Tully’s squad, and setting high expectations for the spring season.

Highlights of the championship meet include gold medal performances from the 4x800 relay team of Ryan McMahon, Will Dowling, Max McCullough, and Keith Roberts (who ran 8:29.97), shot putter Eli Souied (who threw 47’10”), pole vaulter Sal Ricci (who cleared 12’6” to win the pole vault for the second year consecutively), and 800 runner Keith Roberts (2:00.29 to win his third consecutive individual 800 championship, following wins last season in indoor and outdoor).

The future is bright for the track Hounds, as some young athletes turned in notable performances. Beck Wittstadt’s strong kick in the 1600 was one of the electric moments of the night, and his time of 4:26 is currently the #1 time nationally for a current sophomore. The all-underclassmen 4x200 team of Mamady Dangnokho, Jamir Roberts, Nigel Parker, and Nico Gonzalez-Reed earned a bronze medal, running 1:35.15. Finally, freshman Donny Young finished third in the triple jump (with a hop, skip, and a jump covering 40’5.75”), a top ten national mark for freshmen.

Squash: Varsity Squash had a 7-1 record going into winter break losing only the one match to McDonogh. January has been very productive so far, with the Hounds only dropping four games while winning six matches with a score of 7-0. Seniors Charlie East, Clark Dowling, Grant Emry, Brandon Ahearn and Freddie Allner, continue to provide motivation and leadership. The team is looking forward to the rematch against McDonogh on January 29.

Over the first weekend in February the team will be competing in the High School National tournament as a high seed in Division II.

Swimming: Gilman swam against Spalding yesterday and came away with a resounding 96-63 victory. Max Verheyen collected victories in the 100 Free and 100 Back. Bryce Lloyd won the 200 and 500 Free. Nathan Hedgecock won the 100 Breaststroke, Eric Zhang won the 200 IM, and Philip Morgan collected a win in the 100 Butterfly. Gilman’s 200 Medley team of Verheyen, Hedgecock, Morgan, and Perry finished a mere second off the school record, a record likely to fall as soon as today.

Wrestling: The Wrestling Hounds proved their mettle in three matches with DC area powers last week, besting Episcopal and Gonzaga, while dropping a tough match to Landon. Junior captain Andy Weinstein went 3-0 and pinned all of his opponents. Mattheus Carroll also went 3-0, pinning all of his opponents even though he bumped up to heavyweight. Patrick Bindjeme got his first varsity win this weekend after defeating Episcopal's 160 lbs. 6-3 in a hard fought match.
