Great restaurants, easy transportation, and city pride — just a few of the many reasons several Gilman faculty members call downtown Baltimore their home. Now is your chance to meet a few of them. Here’s Gilman Lower School teacher and Butchers Hill resident Meredith Miller.

Meredith Miller

Meredith Miller is the homeroom teacher in 1B. She has brought her passion for baseball to Gilman first graders by designing an entire unit about Babe Ruth and his Baltimore roots. The boys (and their parents) enjoy a field trip to Camden Yards each September.

Miss Miller graduated from Gilman’s neighbor, Bryn Mawr, in 2005. She attended the University of Richmond where she studied Elementary Education and completed her student teaching in Chesterfield County, VA. She returned to Baltimore after college to help start Gilman’s Kindergarten program, where she taught for three years. Miss Miller then moved into her dream job of teaching first grade. She recently received her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Towson University.

If Miss Miller is not at Gilman enjoying a sporting event, then you might find her at Camden Yards or M&T Bank Stadium. She is a Baltimore fan through and through. You could also find her taking her dogs for a hike, watching her brother play golf, travelling with her dad, taking photos of friends and family, or working with the high schoolers in her church’s youth group.

 What's your favorite part of your job?

It is impossible to choose one favorite part of teaching at Gilman! I love my dedicated and loving coworkers who have become like a second family to me. I love the families who trust me every day with their sons. I love getting to know parents through the many interactive activities we do in first grade. Most of all, I love my students. I love watching the huge amount of growth the boys make over the course of their year with me. I love being able to share my passion for reading, math, and particularly baseball with them. It is incredibly fun to get children excited about something that they might not otherwise have found interesting at all! Gilman is such a special place to watch boys mature, learn, succeed, fail, learn from their failures, and grow over the course of their Gilman journey. I can’t imagine a better place to spend my days.

Why did you choose to become a teacher?

I have wanted to become a first grade teacher ever since I was in first grade. People have a hard time believing me, but I had a student teacher who influenced me so much that I wanted to grow up to be just like her! She was kind, patient, and supportive, and I hope to be as inspiring to my boys as she was to me.

Your favorite sports team?

Ask any of my students or take a look around my classroom… I am a die-hard Orioles fan!

What do you love about living in the city?

I love living downtown because I really like being able to walk everywhere I need to go. I have restaurants, stores, and shops within walking distance of my house. It's also fun having other Gilman teachers very nearby! We play on a rec football team together, which is a blast! I mostly love being around all the hype for our local sports teams. If you can't already tell, I'm kind of an O's fan.
