Spring Breaking

While many students took off for a well-deserved vacation during spring break, Head Coach Larry Sheets and the members of the varsity baseball team boarded a bus and headed south. The trip began with a visit to Wake Forest University, where the team toured campus, tested out the baseball facilities, and took in a Demon Deacons game -- they were even captured on the game’s TV broadcast. Over the following five days, the team played five games in Georgia and North Carolina, posting a record of 4-1. On the first day in Atlanta, Gilman superfans Marcus Simms ‘95, David Kim ‘97, and Trent Stone '97 (with his son, who was dressed in a Class of '36 shirt) stopped by to catch the Greyhounds in action. During the trip, David graciously hosted the team for dinner at Breakers. The final game in Georgia was a stop at Westminster School, where Assistant Coach Russell Wrenn ’96 threw out the first pitch in recognition of his time as a Wildcat teacher and coach. The trip also provided us the chance to finally present Marcus with the captain’s chair he earned for spearheading our efforts to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Gilman’s First Black Alumni back in October.
