Leadership Training Across Divisions
Updated

On a recent Saturday the Middle School held an affinity leadership retreat. While there are many things a student might choose to do on a weekend other than return to school, nearly 60 boys participated. Facilitated by ten Upper School affinity group leaders, the event was designed to encourage dialogue across divisions and set the standard for affinity groups in the Gilman community.

An affinity group is a space for people with common interests and under-represented voices to share ideas and experiences. These groups play a vital role in ensuring an inclusive environment where all are seen, heard, and valued. Some affinity groups that exist in the US include the Black Student Union, Muslim Student Association, Asian Awareness Club, and Gender and Sexuality Awareness. The MS has a thriving Diversity Council, which has created a dialogue series to promote unity and foster cooperative spirit within and beyond campus walls. Learn more about the Open Dialogue series here.

The goal for the retreat was to give participants a foundation to help rising student leaders facilitate important and honest conversations. Boys learned how to listen to and celebrate each other.
