CyberHounds Take First Place in Robotics Competition

Gilman's Middle School First Lego League teams competed at the Battle by the Bay FLL Qualifier Challenge held at Anne Arundel Community College on Saturday, December 13, 2025. The seventh grade team — the CyberHounds — took home the first place Core Values award with a score that qualified for the state tournament.

The team worked with Mike Taylor, an outreach scientist at NASA Goddard, on their project, which combined using Landsat imagery and the handheld STELLA spectroscopy instrument to identify potential regions for Archeological digs. They received praise from a judge who said that their presentation and innovative project were one of the best he had seen.

“We are super proud of all the boys who competed and showed up with such great attitudes and energy!” said Director of Middle School iLab Katie Schmidt.

Director of Education Technology Lynn Nichols added, “Both the CyberHounds and the GearHounds (fifth/sixth grade team) did a great job, and we are so proud of everything they learned this season!”

Congratulations to all!
