They hula-ed, shot hoops, participated in service learning, raised $1,300 for Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake, and, perhaps most importantly, Gilman’s Middle School students came together on Wednesday, February 21 to take some time out for fun and tradition at the annual Hoops for Habitat.
The event gives boys the opportunity to play three-on-three basketball in grade-level tournaments with creative team names and costumes. This year, 42 teams competed, and a total of 150 students participated either by playing or volunteering in the tournament. Additionally, a hula-hoop competition was held, which involved dozens of hula-hoopers and about 100 spectators.
Following all versions of hoop games, students took part in service learning activities, writing thank you notes to veterans and deployed troops through Operation Gratitude and making 200 sandwiches for those facing food insecurity through Our Daily Bread Employment Center.
A big thank you to teachers Elizabeth Sesler-Beckman, Isaiah Buchanon, Taushaunna Patience, and Mark Lemon for their work to ensure the event ran smoothly — and especially to Hannah Kolkin, in her inaugural year leading it — as well as parent Mariajosé Castellano for organizing the parent volunteers.
