Making Their Moves Count: Gilman Students Excel at State Chess Championships

Twelve Gilman students across all divisions competed over the weekend of April 18–19, 2026 at the Maryland State Scholastic Chess Championships, an exceptionally challenging tournament featuring more than 600 participants from more than 100 schools across the state. The Greyhounds rose to the occasion and delivered outstanding performances.

  • Cameron C. '34, Rayan B. '33, Mason H. '34, George Z. '33, Sebastian S. '34, and Samuel M. '33 earned first place in the Elementary School Under 800 section. Individually, George placed seventh, and Rayan placed eighth in this division.
  • Bond L. '32, Elan L. '30, and Amjad G. '30 finished eighth in the Middle School Under 1000 section. Notably, Elan captured first place in the Under 600 subsection.
  • In the Middle School Championship section, Spencer C. '30 and Ian C. '31 achieved an impressive fourth-place finish.
  • In the High School Championship section, Eric Sun '27 placed ninth in the state in a highly competitive field.

All of our players demonstrated exceptional focus, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to each of these students on their remarkable achievements!
