Recap: Blue-Gray Weekend 2024

Gilman alumni came back to campus in droves during Blue-Gray weekend 2024.

A spirited group of 20 alumni representing the Classes of 1976 to 2014 kicked off the weekend’s festivities on Friday afternoon. Seizing the opportunity to gather twice in one evening, the Gilman Black Alumni Society (GBAS) met in the McCarthy Room for for drinks and snacks before attending the evening’s Bull Roast. Revelry accompanied a curated slideshow of students spanning five decades, stirring up nostalgia and generating conversation for the guests. The fraternal bonds were evident throughout the cocktail party, serving as the perfect preamble to a night of camaraderie in the Redmond C. S. Finney Athletic Center arena.

The 41st Annual Bull and Oyster Roast then packed the arena with nearly 500 enthusiastic attendees. Alumni, parents, faculty, and staff joined forces to toast Gilman while sampling from a range of delicious food and drink. Music and games provided extra entertainment, but the silent auction was a highlight. Alumni contributed to an array of exciting prizes and experiences; special appreciation for these generous alumni for their involvement: Marcus Holman ’09, Brett Hollander ’03, Jake Groenke ’13, Jeremy Pollock ’03, Teddy Lewis ’03, Malcolm Ruff ’02, Murray deMuth ’78, Gavin Sheets ’14, Dylan Salmon ’02, and Brett Tilley ’15.

Perfect weather on Saturday set the stage for the 108th installment of the Gilman-McDonogh football game. In advance of kickoff, alumni from six championship football teams came back to celebrate the anniversary of their titles. The 1974, 1994, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014 champs united under a tent on Harris Terrace to reminisce over a catered lunch buffet. At halftime of the big game, the gridiron veterans — former players and coaches — gathered at midfield for a series of remarks and hearty applause from a crowd of Greyhound fans. Afterward, a tight battle tilted in favor of the Eagles in the second half, and the visitors pulled away for a 21-3 victory. Nevertheless, the Gilman community enjoyed a fun-filled day on a beautiful afternoon in Roland Park. Thanks to the hundreds of alumni who came out to support the Blue and Gray!
