Recap: Washington, D.C. Alumni Reception 2024
Forty alumni gathered for Gilman’s annual Washington, D.C. regional reception at the Cosmos Club in Dupont Circle on Thursday, Sept. 19. Founded in 1878, Cosmos Club is a private social club for men and women “distinguished in science, literature, the arts, learned professions, or public service.”

Co-hosts John Morris ’96 and Darius Jennings ’11 welcomed their fellow Greyhounds with a few warm reflections on Gilman. John commented on lessons learned from legendary Head of School Redmond C. S. Finney ’47, particularly Mr. Finney’s emphasis on first-class citizenship and following the “Golden Rule.” He humbly voiced his contentment to find in Gilman alumni from every generation the same transcendent values, including respect for everyone regardless of background or circumstances. Darius thanked Gilman for changing his life’s trajectory. He spoke of the privilege of attending Gilman and enjoying the strength and loyalty of the community. He encouraged attendees to give back to their alma mater as to ensure the next generation of deserving students also have access to more life-changing opportunities.

Head of School Henry P. A. Smyth then provided an update on School life, highlighting the energy and enthusiasm on campus in an exciting start to the school year, after which he welcomed a period of Q&A. Guests took turns inquiring about a wide range of topics tied to culture and curriculum, from proper utilization of AI and management of cell phones, to understanding and celebrating a range of backgrounds and perspectives in texts chosen in the humanities classrooms.

After the healthy Q&A session, it was time to reconnect with old friends and mentors. Longtime faculty members and special guests Tim Holley ’77 and Brooks Matthews ’87 held court with former students and players, reminiscing on favorite events from the good ol’ days.

The last guests trickled out, with many words of gratitude, almost an hour after the stated closing time. It was another reminder of the special bonds between Gilman alumni and the omnipresent pride and nostalgia evoked during a regional event. Thanks to all the Greyhounds for coming out to support the School and one another!
