Water Polo Reigns Supreme in MIAA

by Colin Regan, Sports Information Coordinator and Upper School Faculty

It was a great day to be a Greyhound in the pool on Saturday, November 1, 2025. Both the Varsity and JV teams captured MIAA titles in front of an energetic crowd at the Loyola University Aquatics Center. Varsity secured a 17-9 win over Calvert Hall to finish undefeated in MIAA Conference play, while JV earned a 13-9 win over Loyola to avenge their two regular-season defeats to the Dons.

Coming into the weekend, the Varsity team was looking to put an exclamation mark on a tremendous season in which they had been truly dominant. After losing in the semifinals last year, the team was determined to write a different ending to their season this time. They kicked things off on Thursday afternoon by defeating rival McDonogh 13-9 to advance to Saturday’s Championship game. After weathering a quick start from the Cardinals, who jumped out to a 5-3 lead after the first quarter, the Hounds took momentum by winning the second quarter to level the score at 8-8 heading into halftime. In the second half, it was all Hounds as they took the lead and never looked back, outscoring the Cardinals 9-1 over the last two periods, which included holding the Cardinals scoreless for the entire third quarter.

The Hounds got contributions on both ends of the pool from across the entire lineup. Treve Darby ’27 (4 goals, 4 assists, and 5 steals) led the way with a performance that earned him the game’s MVP Award. Jonathan Bradlee ’27 (4 goals), Hayden Dodge ’26 (2 goals), and Brody Carr ’26 (2 goals) all contributed multi-goal efforts, while Grant Wright ’27 chipped in 1 goal, 3 assists, and 6 steals. In goal, Baxter Bertozzi ’26 and Nikhil Krishna ’27 split the duties between the pipes and combined to make 13 saves.

“Congratulations to JV Head Coach Charlie Hiller ’21 [in his inaugural season as a coach] and his squad for showing tremendous discipline, sticking to, and executing their game plan in the JV Championship game,” said Head Coach Vaughan Smith. “For Varsity, hard work and defense wins championships! We had a slow start defensively, but our true ‘team D’ showed up in the second half and therefore made our offensive execution that much easier.”

Smith would like to thank the team’s five seniors, captains Sam Nuermberger and Hayden Dodge, as well as Leo Eiswert, Baxter Bertozzi and Ethan Derman, for their contributions to the program over the last four years. “And to our dynamic assistant coach, Coach Devina Bhalla, thank you for all you do to help make this program and our student-athletes successful in and out of the pool.”
