Fourth Graders Win Two Awards at Robotics Competition

Sunny Legend Robot, the robotics team formed by fourth graders Ethan S. and Gavi W., along with another friend, came away with two achievements from the First Lego League Qualifier event at Rockville Science Center on Saturday, February 19, a competition for children ages 9-16. In their first-ever robotics contest, they won first place for the Robot Performance Award. The judges said, “Amazing robot design translated to the top score in Robot Performance. Your diligence has not gone unnoticed. Top score: 590 points.”

They also won second place for the Champion Award. The judges noted, “Using their strong teamwork, this team achieved success across all areas of the competition. They demonstrated First’s Core Values throughout their innovation project and robot design. Additionally, they maximized their robot’s efficiency by using specific attachments to complete the Cargo Connect missions accurately.”

“I think the best part about this the competition was collaborating together, getting to learn more about each other, and seeing what each of our talents are,” Gavi said.

These wins advanced the team to the Maryland State Tournament, which will be held in March. Congratulations, Ethan and Gavi!
