Over the weekend of February 24-27, Gilman’s varsity squash team traveled to Philadelphia to compete in the 2022 US High School Nationals. The Hounds had a successful regular season locally in Maryland, including a 7-0 win over St. Paul’s (Maryland) in the MIAA Team Championship, as well as a number of challenging out-of-state matches. Building on this success, the Hounds were excited to be seeded #10 in the first division at Nationals, which consists of the top 16 teams in the country.
Despite losing a hard-fought match (5-2) to St. Paul’s (New Hampshire) in the first round of the main draw, Gilman went on to win the most consecutive matches at Nationals in the program’s history. En route to the ninth-tenth playoff, the Hounds beat two perennially strong programs from Massachusetts, Belmont Hill School (5-2) and Andover (4-3). These wins led Gilman into a rematch against Conestoga High School from Pennsylvania, who the Hounds lost to 4-3 in the regular season. Conestoga HS is another team that has historically contended in the division one bracket and a tough matchup for Gilman, yet Gilman won 4-3 to clinch the ninth position in the country and to exceed their original seeding.
Congratulations to the 2021-2022 Gilman varsity squash team!
