Jalen Rucker Sets New Record

On Friday, March 1, the Gilman Varsity Basketball Team concluded its season in the Finney Center with a hard-fought 55-69 loss to Glenelg in the Championship Game of the 2019 Independent Schools Tournament. With just a few minutes to play, the voice of the Greyhounds, Dan Christian, stopped the action to make a special announcement, “With his last basket, Senior Jalen Rucker has surpassed Cyrus Jones ‘12 to become Gilman Basketball’s all-time leading scorer.” Rucker finished the game with 28 points, giving him 1744 for his career and edging out Jones’ 1734 points for the top spot.
“This is one of those times where a young man set a goal and was willing to go above and beyond to accomplish it,” said Coach Will Bartz ‘99. “Through thick and thin, he has been our leader.” Jalen delighted fans and teammates with furious drives to the basket, creatively evading shot blockers en route. This uncanny ability to finish at the rim, coupled with a remarkable work ethic, has earned Jalen the opportunity to continue his basketball career next season at the United States Military Academy - Army.
Rounding out the list of the school’s all-time leading scorers are Jimmy Fields ’94 (1693 pts.), Ryan Ripken ’12 (1468 pts.), Scott Gehring ’02 (1272 pts.*), Matt Eastwick ’88 (1244 pts.), Duane Hollaway '90 (1054 pts.), Ben Goetsch ’06 (1000+ pts.*), and Sherm Bristow ’67 (1000+ pts.*). *Records for this period are incomplete.
