I am pleased to let you know that Eric Marner will be our new Assistant Director of Community, Inclusion, and Equity, beginning in the 2021-2022 school year. Eric will work in partnership with Johnnie to continue to develop and execute a comprehensive pre-k through grade 12 program that builds on the current strengths of the School’s inclusion and equity efforts.
After an extensive search that included a talented pool of internal and external candidates, Eric emerged as one whose combination of experience at Gilman and passion for CIE work position him well for this new role. That experience includes almost a decade of teaching in Baltimore City Public Schools before arriving at Gilman in 2005. He currently fills a variety of roles in the Middle School: Dean of Students, language arts teacher, admissions officer, and Middle School Director of the Finney-Greene Program. We have kept him busy.
I want to thank Johnnie and Pete for leading the search. I also want to recognize Trevlin Alexander, who worked closely with Johnnie and Pete throughout the process, as well as all of the people who participated in interviews. Their collective input and feedback proved to be really helpful as we considered the candidates.
This announcement marks an exciting development for our Office of Community, Inclusion, and Equity, by sealing a commitment the School has made to increase the Office’s capacity to lead this important work.
Please join me in congratulating Eric on his appointment!
Henry P. A. Smyth
