Study-travel Program for Summer 2019

Gilman’s robust study-travel program endeavors to engage students in the world through international travel. Our aim is to best prepare our boys to become citizens of the global community, 7.13 billion strong and growing. We will be offering a broad selection of programs in 2019. Please note dates for parent information sessions, and reach out to the trip contact with any questions.

Thailand and Cambodia–An Exploration of Southeast Asia (Open to grades 9-11)

  • Travel: June 15-27, 2019 (13 days)
  • Cost: approx. $4200
  • Family Information Meeting: Thursday, October 11 at 4:30 pm at Bryn Mawr
  • Application and Deposit ($500) Deadline: November 1

Start your trip in Thailand at the Sappraiwan Elephant Conservation. Spend a few days at the Ricefields Service Base contributing to home construction and agriculture projects. Next, head into Cambodia to gain an understanding of the inner workings of on-the-ground NGO operations. Spend time at The Buddhism for Social Development Action (BDSA) base and the Kong Maha school to contribute to ongoing service initiatives. Finish your journey in Siem Reap to explore the temple complex of Angkor Wat.

WW II European Tour (Open to grades 10-11)

  • Travel: June 18-27 2019

Gilman will once again tour boys through a series of important WWII sites across Europe, including the beaches of Normandy, the Duxford Air Museum, and the Ardennes Forest.

Summer Language Program in Spain (Open to grades 10-11)

  • Travel: June 2019 (approx.two weeks)
  • Cost: Approx. $4000
  • Information Session: Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7:00 p.m. in Centennial Hall

Students initially tour a range of sites in Madrid, Toledo, and Segovia. Then, during the academic/homestay part of the program, students live for twelve days with a host family while taking language and culture classes two hours a day in Gijon, located in the northern province of Asturias.

Peru World Leadership–Puerto Maldonado

  • Travel: July 2019 (2 weeks)
  • Cost: Approx. $4000

Gilman will once again partner this summer with World Leadership School to send a group of students and teachers to participate in a community development project near the city of Puerto Maldonado, Peru. Students will travel to Peru in July for a 15-day leadership and service-oriented program where they will receive practical training in sustainable community-based development.  Students will be fully immersed in the language and traditions of their homestay families during this part of the trip. The trip will culminate with visits to the historical sanctuaries of Machu Picchu and the Incan ruins outside Cusco.

Czech Republic PORG Exchange (Class of 2020, 1 selected)

  • Travel: June 2019 (4-weeks)
  • Host: March/April 2019 (4-weeks)
  • Cost: Gilman covers program and airfare, students will need personal spending money

This opportunity will allow you to host a student from the Czech Republic for four weeks this spring, followed by the chance to visit your exchange student’s family and school for four weeks in the summer before your senior year.

England Exchange at Christ’s Hospital in West Sussex, UK  (Class of 2020, 1 selected)

  • Travel: June 2019 (4-weeks)
  • Host: March/April 2019 (4-weeks)
  • Cost: Gilman covers program and airfare, students will need personal spending money

This opportunity will allow you to host a student from England for four weeks this spring, followed by the chance to visit your exchange student’s family and school for four weeks in the summer before your senior year.

Argentina Exchange Northlands School in Buenos Aires (Class of 2020, 2 selected)

  • Travel: June 2019 (3-weeks)
  • Host: January 2020 (3-weeks)
  • Cost: Gilman covers program and airfare, students will need personal spending money

This opportunity will allow you to travel this coming  June to Argentina and attend the Northlands School while staying with a Northlands student and his family. You and your family will then host this same student here in Baltimore in January of 2020.

South Africa Exchange Bishops College in Cape Town (Class of 2022, 1 selected)

  • Travel: July-August 2020 (6-weeks)
  • Host: October-November 2019 (6-weeks)
